Are naturopathic doctors licensed in Texas?

No. Texas does not currently license or regulate naturopathic doctors (NDs). There is no Texas ND license to look up, and a license from another state does not authorize someone to practice medicine independently in Texas.

Because the title is not protected in Texas, anyone can call themselves a naturopathic doctor. Graduates of accredited naturopathic medical schools who practice in Texas typically state that they cannot diagnose or treat disease under Texas law and that patients should keep a relationship with a Texas-licensed physician for medical care. The Texas Association of Naturopathic Doctors publishes the same guidance for the public.

Practicing medicine without a Texas license is prohibited under the Texas Medical Practice Act (see Texas Occupations Code § 155.001). A 2025 licensing bill (HB 3979) was introduced and referred to the House Public Health Committee but did not become law.

If you are comparing clinics in Texas, ask what Texas credentials the clinician holds (for example MD, DO, NP, or PA), what they can and cannot do under state law, and how they coordinate with a licensed primary care doctor. This page is general information, not legal advice — confirm current rules with the Texas Medical Board and the clinician’s own disclosures.
